We read John's warning in Revelation 12:12 where he says, "Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time."
After warring in heaven with Michael and His angles, Satan was thrown out of heaven and he took one third of the angels with him. He resides on earth, and exercises dominion over it, trying to ensure as many people as possible end up being destroyed with him. God has given us everything we need to overcome Satan; He has even given us the power of His Holy Name, Jesus Christ. When you say His name, out loud, it neutralizes Satan, and ensures the Holy Spirit is there to protect you from Satan.
Bad things can still happen, and they will. But keeping strong with God is the only way to live on this earth.
John provides a tidbit of wisdom for us in Revelation 13:18. He writes, "Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666."
John's vision helps us to identify the beast that Satan has working for him, and helps us understand what we might be up against. It will take every ounce of wisdom and strength we have to resist and fight the beast, but there's an unlimited supply of that from God.
