Reflections from November 25, 2010

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today is the day that we give thanks for all we have, the tradition started by our pilgrims in the US who came here looking for religious freedom, and gave thanks to the Lord for a bountiful harvest. We give thanks to our government who made this a national holiday in 1863. But most of all, we give thanks to God for all He's done for us, especially for the grace we've received through His Son Jesus Christ who died as a ransom for all our sins.

God's gift to us of His Son shows that God does not forget, or change. Peter recognized this when he wrote in 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."

It's interesting to me that Peter mentions we need to come to repentance. He recognized that all have sinned, and need the power of God's love and the cleansing of our sins. But he also knew of God's promises given in the old testament, and fulfilled in the new culminating in His glory as carried out on the cross.

Today, we can choose. Do we get caught up in the day-to-day living, or do we faithfully look to God for completion of His plan on earth, one that evidence shows will occur.

Blessings to all
