Peter does a compare and contrast in today's chapter looking at Sodom and Gomorrah and what God did there against the unjust. With that knowledge and that God can do that, Peter tells us that God will protect the righteous in 2 Peter 2:9, "the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgement."
We can count on God to help us out, but not necessarily do our work for us. He will keep His promises, but we must keep ours and remain faithful and just in his eyes.
