Jesus challenged the chief priests and the scribes to how they conducted themselves as stewards of what God has given them in the parable of the wicked vinedressers. He tells of the landowner that planted the vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went away. He then sent servants in to collect the fruit at vintage time, but the vinedressers mugged him and pushed him out. They did this to two additional servants. Then the vineyard owner thought he would send his son, and the son would receive respect and honor, and the vinedressers would give the fruit. However, the son was killed!
So Jesus says in Luke 20:17-18, “Then He looked at them and said, ‘What then is this that is written, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone”? Whoever falls on that stone will be broken, but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.’”
These people, the priests and scribes, wanted to kill Jesus. Their forebearers had rejected the prophets, and now they were rejecting Jesus. The only thing they were successful at was receiving God’s judgement.
Today, we need to be mindful of all that God has entrusted to us. God owns all of our “possessions” and He calls on us to manage these things. Rather than be obsessed by owning them, we need to remember that we are just tenants or vinedressers, not vineyard owners. All belongs to God, and we can’t reject Him just to keep a possession.
Blessings to all
