Reflections from March 9, 2010

In Hebrews 6, the writer is encouraging us to go beyond the basics and develop a very close and personal relationship with God that is based on intimate knowledge of God. In Hebrews 6:11-12 we read, "And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence in the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those through faith and patience inherit the promises."

We need to keep in mind that God many times does not carry out His promises immediately. God is not a vending machine that dispenses treats at the press of a button. Nor should we expect to be able to call Him up and tell Him to send us what we need by overnight express. We receive His promises in faith, with great patience. Having patience is nothing new to us; we might accept a contract at work for a product or services that takes weeks, months or years to fulfill and not have a single problem with it.

Just as we don't give in to our child's immediate demands, God wants us to grow, that's why He won't give us what we want when we want it. He cultivates faith and perseverance by doing His work in our lives in His way and in His time.

Today in Proverbs 9:10 we read, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

As a youngster, I always wondered why I should love a God that I was fearful of. As I grew in His way and got to know Him in a personal way, I came to realize it's not a fear of being afraid, it's a fear out of respect for Him; and a fear out of love for Him. By adding knowledge of His works, and His teachings, we can have a relationship with our Lord that is close, personal, and full of blessings in a way we never dreamed of. God's wisdom can work wonders in our life, but it must come through a cultivation of time with Him and patience to let Him work His blessings in our life.

Blessings to all
