Today's verse in Hebrews 4:12 is familiar, "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the hearts."
This verse provides a fundamental truth about the bible, in that Scripture is the living and powerful Word of God. The Word of God speaks to heart matters -- intentions and motives. Ultimately, we make choices and act on the basis of our underlying values and notions about what is true and right. God's Word is the authoritative standard by which all thoughts and actions are to be measured. God's Word lives because it is connected to the source of life by Jesus Christ.
In Proverbs today, verses from both chapters 5 and 6 are relative to each other. Proverbs 5:23 reads, "He shall die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray." Proverbs 6:32 reads, "Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul."
I heard last Sunday during our sermon how adultery is on the same level of sin as murder. It seems there are 2 things here regarding the murder of ourselves; not receiving instruction and committing adultery. Not being wise will allow us to be seduced and that can lead to adultery and that leads to our death. Likewise, choosing to have an adulterous relationship is proof of not being wise, and we will have the same demise.
Why does this equal murder? Let's look in Exodus 20:13-14, "You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery." It's not a coincidence that these are next to each other. We're fortunate to have Solomon's wisdom recorded for us to clearly point that out.
Blessings to all.
