Reflections from July 29, 2010

Today, we begin Paul's first and second letters to the Corinthians. Paul's letters are relevant to us today, because he was writing to sinners in the church and that includes us. We need to encouragement and reprimand of Paul today, just as much as those early Christians did as well.

Paul starts strong out of the box with words of misunderstanding wisdom when he states in 1 Corinthians 1:18, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God."

Paul recognized that many people believe that belief in Christ and His redemption is foolishness, but that belief will lead them to destruction. Many people believe that today, and look at Christianity as a crutch. Actually, just the opposite is true. Christianity makes one strong, stronger than they could ever be by themselves and relying only on their own strengths. Consider Mother Teresa, who was an insignificant nun that transformed the lives of thousands of fellow countrymen by showing love and compassion to the needy. She became a worldwide symbol of hope and compassion and her legacy lives on. The only way she was able to show this strength was through Jesus.

Christianity is a crutch for the weak; but those who dismiss it for that reason usually do so to deny their own inadequacies. They use that excuse as a way to evade the claims God has on their lives. They cannot escape that He takes wounded, fractured people and makes them whole.

Blessings to all
