Reflections from July 26, 2010

Today we read of Jesus’ words during His final supper with His disciples. During Passover, they sat together and Jesus took bread and wine and said to them in Luke 22:19-20, “And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.’”

These verses hold a lot in them. Jesus gave us a symbol to use to this day of how we can remember what He did on our behalf; a broken body symbolized by broken bread, and a cup of red wine to symbolize His blood that poured out on the ground. We partake of these symbols to remind ourselves and to show others that we are of the Body of Christ.

Jesus also said this cup is the new covenant. With Jesus final act before His crucifixion, He told of how the covenant that God had with Abraham would be replaced such that we would not require sacrifices anymore. Jesus would be the final perfect lamb of sacrifice, shedding His blood for all our sins.
All we need to do today is accept what Jesus did on our behalf and worship Him as our lord and saviour, and His sacrifice will be enough for our sins.

Blessings to all
