Reflections from June 9, 2010

Today, a short chapter in Ephesians where Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:22-24, "that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness."

Paul was telling the Ephesians to walk differently than unbelievers, that having accepted Christ as their Lord, they belong to a new body, and in this new body, they are a new person.

John Gill calls explains this renewal of the mind this way, "[it is] the gradual progress of it; and takes in, if not principally intends, a renewal, or an increase of spiritual light and knowledge, of life and strength, of joy and comfort, and fresh supplies of grace, and a revival of the exercise of grace; and in short, a renewal of spiritual youth, and a restoration of the saints to that state and condition they were in, in times past: and the exhortation to this can only mean, that it becomes saints to be concerned for such reviving and renewing, and to pray for them, as David did, ( Psalms 51:10 ) for otherwise, this is as much the work of the Spirit of God, as renovation is at first; and he only who is sent forth, and renews the face of the earth, year by year, can renew us daily in the Spirit of our minds." He goes on to day that "to put on the new man, is to walk according to the principles of grace and holiness formed in the soul".

In Proverbs 9:11 we read today, "For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you."

Ahhhh! The power of wisdom. It can add years to our lives! How so? By going to her and eating of her bread and drinking of her wine that she has prepared for us, and thus our spiritual lives will be maintained, promoted and preserved, and by doing so, we will not only remain close to the Lord, but will grow closer to Him each and every day.

Blessings to all
