Reflections from June 8, 2010

A prayer given by Paul to the Ephesians is what we read today in Ephesians 3:16-19, "that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height -- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

This prayer allows us to stop, pause, and give glory to all that God has done on our behalf. Not just in our current life, but to take in the really big picture...to think about all the things that God put into motion long before we were born. And to think about how things will play out long after we're gone. When we think about the factors that became real for our life to be as it is, our heritage, our family, our experiences, our neighbors, our community, our schooling; everything has been according to God's plan in our life. If our life has been focused on doing His will, then it's most likely been pleasant; however, if we find ourselves with many years of sadness or bitterness, it might be because we've pushed God out of our life so we don't follow His plan. His plan encompasses the width, length, depth and height of our life; in other words, everything. If we spend time in prayer, and understand His plan, our life will certainly have more meaning and will allow us to have joy knowing the picture of our legacy after we've gone to be with the Lord.

In Proverbs 8:8 we read, "All the words of my mouth are with righteousness, Nothing crooked or perverse is in them."

Solomon writes with wisdom in the first person, with wisdom speaking to us. It wants us to know all the qualities it has, and for us to use it, gain it, hold on to it. When wisdom (like Christ) dwells in us, our life is for the better. Today it describes the improvement to one facet of our life through our speech.

Have you ever said something and as soon as it left your lips you thought, "O man, I need to grab those words before the person hears them!" Too late. Wisdom helps us to not let those words escape the mouth. We won't say the things we want to take back, because we won't utter perverse or crooked things. We can live more freely and confidently when we have God's wisdom guiding and directing us, even in our speech.

Blessings to all
