Reflections from May 27, 2010

Today we read in Romans 11:20-22, "Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. Therefore, consider the goodness and severity of God on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off."

Paul has described in this metaphor Jews as natural olive tree branches and Gentiles as wild olive tree branches. There have been some of the natural branches removed and wild branches grafted into the natural tree. The natural tree is, of course, the Body of Christ. Paul warns the Gentiles to not boast to the Jews as there are not grounds for it. The point to Paul's writing is unity that characterizes the people of God from both covenants. Some branches needed to be removed to make room for the grafted ones. The difference between the two branches is the presence of faith. Unbelief meant rejection. Faith meant acceptance. Instead of resting proudly in a false sense of security, the individual Gentile is to fear. Genuine fear of God and respect for Him constitute the basis of true assurance. God broke off the natural branches because of their unbelief. If He did not tolerate unbelief in them, neither will He tolerate it in us.

From Proverbs 27:2 we read, "Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth, A stranger, and not your own lips."

Fortunately, Solomon is usually pretty clear in his words. This tells us, Don't be boastful! Let your accomplishments come from the mouth's of others. Don't toot your own horn (too much).

Blessings to all
