Reflections from May 12, 2010

As we come to the conclusion of Matthew, we see the beginning of Christianity take hold and its roots watered and fed so that it will spread. Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:19 & 20, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen."

Simple words for a complex issue. The Jews were looking solely for their King, not one that had to be shared with "all the nations." Now they had to share Him with everyone! Some of Jesus disciples had a hard time with that, and today, some of us might have a hard time as well. We might say we're open to the idea that Jesus is for all people, but it is easier to worship Jesus when He fits only our own western heritage culture.

Culture is a key here. The disciples of Jesus experienced culture shock when the Holy Spirit brought new groups into the fellowship including Hellenists, Samaritans, and Gentiles! Today, the Holy Spirit brings in non-white, non-western disciples from "all nations." Therefore, some of us are facing the same challenges that faced the Jewish disciples; to believe and accept that Jesus is for all nations.

The second part of Jesus' commission is easier, where He states I will be with you to the end of age. So while we're making disciples, while we're going through hardships on His behalf, while we're facing temptations, while we're facing Satan head on, we have the promise that Jesus is with us always. What a wonderful comfort that is.

From Proverbs 12:27 we read, "The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, But diligence is man's precious possession."

Lazy people don't want to do anything; not even take time to properly prepare their food. When you find someone with "get-to-it-tiveness", you've found a treasure. That is one of their most prized possessions.

Many people have this in their character, they just haven't turned it on! Prayer to God will help do that, and help get them going, and keep them going.

Blessings to all
