Today we see that Jesus talks with the devil and in Matthew 4:10 we read, "Then Jesus said to him, 'Away with you, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve."'"
I heard a sermon on this passage of scripture given by Dr. John Morgan of Sagemont Church in Houston a few years ago. He described this as a boxing match between Jesus and Satan; where in three rounds, Jesus delivered the knock-out punch, "...and Him only you shall serve." But, what really was the basis for the power of Jesus' words was Him saying, "It is written." Every temptation that Satan brought, Jesus could say those words (He knew them well since He was the one who wrote a lot of it.)
The great thing about these verses of Scripture is that it shows the temptation of Christ, and it's another way that makes Jesus just like us, and it shows that we can be just like Him. We can overcome temptation by being based strongly in God's written word, through daily reading and reflection, and with prayer to strengthen our relationship with Him. If you had a friend that you called everyday, and spent time with everyday in some manner, wouldn't you naturally become close to them? It's the same way with God. He'll help us with temptation; all we need to do is become closer to Him on a daily basis.
From Proverbs 8:7 we read, "For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips."
Wisdom will help us know what's right. God's wisdom will help us to do what's right. God's wisdom can be trusted to guide us correctly, because God abhors wickedness.
Blessings to all
