Reflections from April 23, 2010

Today we read in Matthew 15:28, "Then Jesus answered and said to her, 'O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.' And her daughter was healed from that very hour."

All great preachers, even Jesus, need time off to rest, relax, and recuperate. Jesus and His disciples had gone to the coast for some time off. But still, people wanted His attention and help and the mother in this verse was no different. She persisted and had faith that Jesus would answer her prayer. She knew that He was capable of doing what she could not - heal her daughter. In the end, her courage, faith, and sheer persistence won out. We need to be just as persistent when crying out to God for people that are close to us as well; whether it's our children, spouse, parents, brothers or sisters. Be persistent and pray without ceasing.

From Proverbs 23:12 we read, "Apply your heart to instruction, And you ears to words of knowledge."

Picture a father instructing his child. The son is here brought in and the father is persuading him to give his mind to his book, and especially to the scriptures and its instructions. The son needs to attend to the words of knowledge, by which he might come to know his duty, and danger, and interest, and not to think it enough to give them the hearing, but to apply his heart to them, to delight in them, and bow his will to the authority of them. The heart is then applied to the instruction when the instruction is applied to the heart.

These same instructions apply to us today. As we read God's work, we need to apply them to hear, delight in God's words, and bow to the authority of God through His words. Let us pray to apply God's instructions to our hearts.

Blessings to all
