Reflections from April 22, 2010

Our verse today is from Matthew 14:28-31 that reads, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink cried out, "Lord, save me!" And immediately, Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him and said to him, "O you of little faith, why do you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased."

We should have no problem seeing how this passage can apply to us today. How often do we go to Jesus when things are great, or are fun, or in general, life is just good? But along the way, something happens that takes that fun away and creates fear in our life. We start looking only to ourselves and stop looking to Jesus knowing that He can keep the good times going. As we begin to doubt, we begin to sink; sometimes sinking into despair. But, like Peter, we too can cry out to Jesus and say, "Lord, save me!" And it truly is comforting to know that Jesus still holds out His hand to grab us and save us and calm the winds of fear and doubt.

From Proverbs 22:24-25 we read today, "Make no friendship with an angry man, And with a furious man do not go. Let you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul."

I think there are two sides to this passage; one is obvious that we don't want to associate with people that are always angry in their life. It tends to rub off and you start agreeing with everything that they say. "This is wrong, that's wrong and by golly, it really makes me mad!!!" Anger starts to fill our life and then, as the second side, people will stop associating with us, because they read in Proverbs 22 to not be friends with an angry man. Then we really are lonely and angry and then that leads to depression.

If we let our love for the Lord shine through in our life, we won't exhibit anger or strife. People will gravitate to that influence in our life that comes from the Holy Spirit.

Blessings to all
