Reflections from February 5, 2010

A somber New Testament verse today from Acts 12:23, "Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died."

Of course it helps to know a bit of context in which Herod Agrippa I was struck by the angel; but essentially it was due to his arrogance and persecution of James and Peter. The reminder for us should be that in all that we do, give glory to God, and fear God. Not because of being afraid of God as in Worship God or else, but more to fear Him as our Almighty King and Lord worthy of our respect and to be humble before Him. The key here is to realize that we are constantly before Him, either in private or in public; all that we do should be honor and glory to God above all else.

Being Friday, we do double duty today. However the verses from Proverbs go hand-in-hand. From Proverbs 5:15 we have, "Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well." And Proverbs 6:25, "Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, Nor let her allure you with her eyelids."

Most guys are happy with the "water from their cistern," that is, the woman we're married to. But when a man let's the thought of a neighbor's well creep into his heart, it's easy to be seduced into thinking that his well has sweeter water, it's more refreshing, it's fresher. That's the danger of the seductress. It easily creeps into your heart, wraps itself around you, and Boom! the next thing you know is your clothes are burned and your feet are seared! We must constantly guard our heart and keep to the fountain we've been blessed with.

Blessings to all.
