Reflections from February 3, 2010

The New Testament verse today is Acts 10:43, "To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins."

What a powerful promise, to receive remission. We might think of remission in medical terms as in someone's cancer is in remission. However, in that context, our sins might be laid aside for a period. In the context of Peter's statement to Cornelius, remission of sins comes from the verb remit with a meaning "to release from guilt or penalty of" with no mention of any time frame. Belief in Jesus as our Lord and Savior provides permanent remission of sins and has those sins laid aside. That provides so much comfort in this day and age.

Our verse from Proverbs is Proverbs 3:9, "Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase;"

The Lord doesn't want nor does He deserve what's left over. He deserves our best and He deserves it before anyone or anything else gets it; whether it's our time, our money, our talents, anything; God is interested not only in our tithe, but with everything we have. It's easy to forget that what we have we owe to God, and anyway, it belongs to Him.
