Today we begin the book of Numbers which gets it name from Moses having taken a census of the tribes of Israel in preparation for war to take the Promised Land. Numbers will show us that God indeed does mean what He says.
Moses does indeed take a census as God directed to count all males 20 years and older from each of the families of Israel, except the Levites. We read the results in Numbers 1:45-46,
So all who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war in Israel -- all who were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty."
And that's just the males. Assume each male counted was married, and each couple had 1.2 children; that's a population of 1,448,520 people! God had indeed blessed them to be fruitful.
God goes on to tell them the locations of their camps around the tabernacle, arranged by families: Three to the north, three to the south, three to the east and three to the west. Israel did these things as mentioned in Numbers 2:34,
"Thus the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses; so they camped by their standards and so they broke camp, each one by his family, according to their fathers' house."
by doing so Israel showed themselves as obedient, and as written by David in Psalms 64:10,
The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory."
Simple commands, great benefits for following. God makes it easy, we make it hard.
Blessings to all
