Reflections from September 28, 2010

Today in 1 John 2:1-2, John writes of the glorious news of our having an advocate in Heaven who intervenes on our behalf when he writes, "...these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world."

One of the promises we have received from Jesus is that He will go to the Father on our behalf. He will appease God for our sins, because He was the sacrifice that we can use to appease God when we sin. In that way, we still have the offerings of a sacrifice just as was in the Old Testament and the Mosaic law. But, the difference now versus then, Jesus also helps us avoid sin in the first place. By having the Holy Spirit dwell within us, and by maintaining and building a strong relationship with Jesus and with the Father, we build a stronger and stronger hedge of protection around us that helps us stay obedient to God and to avoid the things of the world including the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:16).

We should thank God everyday for providing Jesus to be an atonement for our sins and thank Jesus everyday for accepting this assignment to be nailed to the cross on our behalf.

Blessings to all
