Reflections from July 1, 2010

Today we read of Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist. Luke writes very little of this account, only saying in Luke 3:21-22, "When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus was also baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.""

What an event that must have been to witness! Not only to see that dove come to Jesus, but to hear the voice of God coming from heaven directly! It's enough to make us wonder if we'll ever hear from God. The answer to that is I believe we do, although not in a audible voice as Jesus did that day. I think we hear God in our hearts and in our minds, especially when we pray and talk to Him. When we tell Him how much we love Him, or how thankful we are for what He does, or just thank Him for being God! When we put God first and strive to keep His word hidden in our heart so that we may know Him, I think he also says to us that "I am well pleased."

Blessings to all
