Reflections from June 30, 2010

After a brief time-out, we return to our readings, and will schedule make up. For today, we start with Luke an accounting of Jesus' life and His impact on all people, not just Jews.

Luke was a well educated Greek physician, and traveled with Paul on some of his journeys. Luke gathered first hand accounts of Jesus' life from people who were with Jesus and saw the events in person. The accuracy of Luke's account has never been in question. His account is a writing that is disciplined, carefully crafted historical record that was insprired by the Holy Spirit and is to this day, a certified account of Jesus' life.

We read today in Luke 1:19, "And the angel answer and said to him, 'I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings."

The interesting thing about this passage is that Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, had doubt that the message Gabriel brought was factual; Zacharias had doubts and he expressed them to the angel. It's easy to understand his having doubts as both he and his wife were advanced in age; however, the angel simply stated, "I stand in the presence of God." That is enough to ensure the messenger is trustworthy, as nothing but truthfulness can be in God's presence.

As we seek to be in God's presence by daily reading, meditation and prayer, are we actually allowed into the "inner room" to stand in the presence of God? Are we nothing but truthfulness, so that God does not banish us from being with Him? We must be faithful and true, and live a life such that our only statement of honesty needs to be, "I am a Christian." And, like Gabriel, nothing else is needed to be said.

Blessings to all
